Abstract
A new method is described for measuring the degree of enamel de- and remineralization. This method is to measure the vertical area of surface profile on enamel specimen with Talysurf 10 (Taylor Hobson). To investigate the accuracy and reproducibility of this-method, the results for enamel demineralization with pH were compared with the results measured with atomic absorption spectroscopy(quantification of calcium, ultra violet: spectrophotometer(quantification of phosphorus), scan electron microscope ;and micro hardness test. The effect of fluoride on enamel remineralization by surface profile measuring method was evaluated according to the kind and concentrations of fluoride. The obtained results were as follows.
1. The demineralized area of enamel with the time course was increased sharply for 5 hours but thereafter was stationary.
2. The results for enamel demineralization with pH compared with other methods indicated that the accuracy and reproducibility of the surface profile measuring method were as high as those of AA or UV, and the surface profile measuring method could detect very small amounts of decalcification of enamel.
3. The enamel remineralization was increased with the concentration of fluoride significantly and the effect on remineralization according to fluoride sources was SMFP { NaF < SMFP + NaF (P<0.05)
